Rise above Thumka

  1. Start on the new courtyard: a wheelbarrow, a hose, and earth that was cleared by hand.
  2. Rise, and the rebuilt houses close in around it, rust-red and blue roofs on stone walls.
  3. Higher, and the village sits on its ridge, the old terraces stepping away on every side.
  4. From 260 metres, the whole valley: roads, fields and forest, with Thumka at the centre.

A stay in Thumka

No front desk. You stay with a family, in houses we rebuilt ourselves, and the day follows the farm and the weather.

See the stay

Sleep in a stone house

Thick stone and mud walls, timber windows and a long balcony over the valley. Rebuilt by hand, the way the grandparents built them.

Eat from the farm

Dal-bhat with greens from the terraces, seasonal vegetables and village cooking, eaten together on the floor of the house.

Coffee on the old terraces

In 2025 we planted coffee on terraces that had gone back to scrub. Walk the rows and see how they are growing.

Walk the old trails

Footpaths link Thumka to the neighbouring villages, the forest and the viewpoints on the ridge. We walk them with you.

Wake up to the Himalaya

On clear mornings the snow peaks fill the northern horizon, often above a sea of cloud lying in the valleys.

From the ridge above the village, the Himalaya fills the horizon on clear mornings. October to February brings the clearest skies.

We are filming the rebuild as it happens: clearing the paths, cutting and laying stone, raising timber balconies and bringing old houses back from the forest. Hundreds of thousands of people follow along.
